The Edgewood football team’s postseason run was ended by the WIAA after it was deemed the Crusaders were using an ineligible player this season.

The ruling forces Edgewood — who was 10-0 and won the Rock Valley Conference with a 7-0 record — to forfeit all of its games this season and knocks the Crusaders out of the WIAA Division 4 playoffs.

Edgewood defeated Kewaskum 40-0 in a Level 2 playoff game on Friday, Oct. 29, to advance to play Columbus.

The player in question was Cam Fane and his eligibility.

Edgewood head coach Jesse Norris released a statement regarding the ruling: “We were stunned and devastated by the allegations that we used an ineligible player this season,” he wrote.

Norris said the athlete in question was granted eligibility in March of 2021 and that the team acted in good faith with the understanding eligibility was obtained.

“I feel terrible for our administration, parents, my staff and most importantly our athletes,” Norris said. “They have worked incredibly hard for every opportunity granted to them. They have battled through adverse situations all season and deserve the opportunities that they have earned.”

Norris ended the statement by saying his team has faith in the process and look forward to working with the WIAA to resolve the matter.

Unfortunately for Edgewood, that did not happen.

The Crusaders’ request for a temporary injunction was denied by Dane County judge Jacob Frost on Friday, Nov. 5.

Edgewood President Mike Elliot called the issue a technical error in a statement.

“Today, a Dane County Circuit Court Judge denied our request for an injunction, so the WIAA remains intact,” Elliot wrote. “Neither Cam nor the Edgewood football team did anything wrong and do not deserve this type of treatment. The team worked extremely hard and earned the right to play in Saturday night’s game and beyond.

“I am proud of our team, our coaches, our parents and our students for how they have conducted themselves during these difficult times, in particular our senior Cam Fane, who is a champion in every respect.”

Before the ruling, Edgewood topped Platteville 53-6 in a Level 1 playoff game on Friday, Oct. 22, at Breese Stevens Field.

The win came after junior Sam Klestinski hit a 43-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter as Madison Edgewood erased a 15-point, fourth-quarter deficit to top Monroe 31-28 for the Rock Valley Conference championship on Friday, Oct. 15, at Breese Stevens Field.
