The Edgewood football team scored 21 first-quarter points on its way to a key 49-35 Capitol Conference opening win against Lake Mills on Friday, Sept. 2, at Lake Mills High School.

The win put the No. 4-ranked Crusaders at 3-0, 1-0 Capitol Conference after a season-opening win over River Valley 31-14 and a 47-13 victory against Prairie du Chien in the second game of the season.

Edgewood senior Mark Haering returned a kickoff 98 yards for the first score of the game in the opening quarter. Lake Mills – ranked No. 5 in Division 4 – responded with a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7, but the Crusaders found the end zone two more times in the first quarter.

Haering caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Ben Hanson to put Edgewood up 14-7. Senior running back Abe Thompson punched in a 1-yard score to extend the advantage to 21-7.

The only score of the second quarter was a 6-yard Thompson run, giving Edgewood a 28-7 lead at the break.

Lake Mills scored the first touchdown of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 28-14, but Edgewood responded when senior Jacob Sheahan returned a kickoff 86 yards into the end zone.

Another L-Cat touchdown made it 35-21 entering the fourth quarter.

The Crusaders put the game out of reach early with consecutive touchdowns – the first a 5-yard pass from Hanson to senior Mason Folkers and the next a 19-yard house call on the ground from Hanson.

The L-Cats’ Ben Buchholtz scored his third and fourth touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game at its final score of 49-35.

Buchholtz finished the game with 135 rushing yards on 10 carries. Thompson led Edgewood’s ground game with 86 yards on 15 carries.

Hanson finished 17 of 27 through the air with 215 yards, a pair of touchdowns and no interceptions. Hanson’s favorite target on the night was Haering, who caught four balls for 68 yards. Lake Mills quarterback Caden Belling threw for 318 yards on 25 of 43 throwing.
