What should I expect after a hospital stay? Will a short stay in a Skilled Nursing Home help me to recover quicker?

Older patients are challenged with a difficult recovery after a hospitalization due to co-morbidities, frailty, and restricted activity during the hospital stay. The consequence is that older adults may benefit from a short term rehabilitation stay at a skilled nursing facility after a joint replacement, cardiac surgery, or a fall at home. Medicare A reimburses 100% of SNF services for the first 20 days if a patient qualifies with a skilled need.

How can I make the holidays enjoyable for my elderly mother or father?

Here are some tips to help seniors enjoy the holidays. 1) Holiday visits: Go visit your elderly loved one during the holidays. Or simply stop in any senior living home and bring a little holiday warmth to someone you don’t know! 2) Gift giving: The best gift of all is “your visit with your elderly family member.” They also love to receive simple gifts, such as chocolates (easy to chew), sweet breads, homemade cookies, apple cider and the like.

Do you recommend finding an assisted living facility if I am a healthy senior?

Even though you are currently in good health, it is never too early to start looking for an assisted living facility. More and more facilities for seniors offer graduated living options. Many facilities have 2 or 3 levels of living that range from no care needed, to some care needed, or even full assisted living care needed. We recommend you look around, visit several places, ask a lot of questions about activities and what price options they have. You will find the right place for you!

My mother will be moving into an assisted living facility soon. How do I help her deal with the sense of loss she is feeling?

No matter the situation, moving is always stressful. But when one is contemplating leaving their home for an assisted living facility, stress and fear can elevate. The thought of leaving everything familiar, including friends and neighbors can be overwhelming. Your mother might also be feeling a loss of independence. It’s important to realize that all of these feelings are normal. However, you can help make this transition easier for her. Acknowledge her feelings and comfort her.
