Library to host county food summit Thursday
The Fitchburg Public Library will host a food summit Thursday, Oct. 24, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. focused on creating a sustainable local food system.
The event, titled Connecting With The Land, is sponsored by the Dane County Food Council and will feature a variety of speakers representing a wide range of food interests and knowledge.
The event will begin with a meal catered by Chef Dave from Liliana’s until 6 p.m., when a panel including Phyllis Hasbrouck, chair of Fitchburg Fields; Wayne Valliere, Ojibwe canoe builder from Lac du Flambeau; Harvey M. Jacobs, professor in Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Jarucha Sirikaew, a local grower from Thailand; and Cristian Dolores Guzman Merlos, a Nicaraguan coffee grower, will take over for an hour an a half.
UW-Madison professor Jack Kloppenburg will facilitate the group.
Merlos, who is a member of Las Diosas coffee cooperative and a member of a Nicauraguan nonprofit working to empower rural women, la FEM, is the featured speaker.
The event sponsors include many group’s from around Dane County.
