Verona schools on lockdown during manhunt
All schools in the Verona Area School District are on lockdown while a manhunt is under way for a homicide suspect sighted in the area around Verona, Fitchburg and south Madison, the district said this afternoon on its website.
The schools are on a "hard lockdown" -- meaning no exit or entrance -- while authorities search for Paris Poe, who is being sought for questioning in a federal murder investigation and for allegedly violating the terms of parole following a conviction for aggravated battery and robbery in Cook County, Ill. Poe was reportedly seen earlier today at the Country Inn on Nesbitt Road.
In Verona, buses will not be picking up or dropping off students until cleared to do so by the Fitchburg and Verona police departments. The district said as of 2:37 p.m. that is it unknown when that will be. Only students whose parents or guardians come to the school site will be allowed to leave, but those parents and guardians must produce a photo identification or other means of verification. All other students, including walkers, will not be allowed to leave the building, the district said on its website.
